It was in 1984 some friends talked us into traveling with them to the Holy Land. One stop the guide made was to the Mount of Olives where Jesus is said to have taken his disciples while he went on ahead to pray. In the Middle of the garden was a huge Olive tree. The Guide went on to tell us the Olive tree was 2000 years old and may have been there to shelter Jesus as he prayed. True or not is does make for a good legend. Our next stop on our way to Bethlehem was the shop of a wood carver. The artesian used Olive wood as the basis of his carvings. We purchased a Nativity set and several carvings for our children and their families. The carvings have become an important part of our household decorations for the Christmas season. We have continued to collect “creche’” or Nativity scenes of a variety of materials, but the Olive wood continues to hold for us special meaning. To share with everyone our love of this memory of our Lord’s birth we offer this selection of scenes and seasonal collector items.
